REVIEW: Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead by Elle Cosimano

Summary

Finlay Donovan is done with dead bodies. After what happened last time, she’s not even up for dealing with her daughter’s dead goldfish. The only good thing about all that happened before – aside from her friendship with Vero and whatever sparked between her and that detective – was it helped her break through her writer’s block.

Unfortunately, the writer’s block is back. And the muses seem intent on setting Finlay up for another wild ride in real life that might help with her next story idea.

Finlay has discovered a post on a women’s forum that seems to be hunting for a contract killer to take out Finlay’s ex-husband. While she doesn’t want him back in the least, Finlay also doesn’t want her kids to suffer if he’s killed. But tracking this would-be killer is going to involve another round of bluffing, bullets, and bodies.

Review

This was fantastic!

Know going in that the books in this series are painful and awkward a lot of the time as Finlay and Vero are magnets for trouble. But the mysteries are brilliantly plotted, the characters are fascinating, and the stories are a hoot! I am a huge fan of this series! Book 1 was one of my 2021 favorite reads.

This book – and book one, Finlay Donovan Is Killing It – are so DIFFERENT from any of the other mystery series I read. They truly feel like a genre all their own – and I am absolutely here for them. I love the writing angle as Finlay tries to wrangle the crazy situations she finds herself in into useable fiction for her career. I love the relationship between Finlay and Vero. And the piling on of problems and spiral-staircase-like twists to the mystery kept me frantically turning pages until the end.

Another feature I love in these is the epilogue that teases the next book. I am already thinking about what could happen in book 3 for Finlay and Vero. The next book is a must-read for me. (Language)

YEAR IN REVIEW – Best of 2021 for Adults

2021 was a tough reading year for me. Between starting a new job, rediscovering an old hobby, and (waves vaguely at a world in chaos), I found it hard to stop doom scrolling and focus long enough to really engage with the sort of reading I usually do. But that doesn’t mean 2021 didn’t have some amazing books that I thoroughly enjoyed. Here are some of my favorites for adults from what I read in 2021:

Best of 2021 – Adult Fiction

Hunt the Stars (♥♥♥♥½)- These books aren’t necessarily in order, but if I had to pick a favorite adult fiction book from last year, I think Hunt the Stars would be the one. It helps that it was one of the last books I read in 2021. But I remember so clearly as I was reading being delighted by the whole story and the characters, and feeling such joy whenever I checked my progress and saw I had so much book still left to enjoy.  This one doesn’t release until this year, but the author is a favorite, so I prioritized this one over some others I probably should have read – and I was not disappointed. If you enjoyed The Consortium Rebellion series or you love romantic scifi, put this one on your list for February 2022. Stay tuned for my full review in February as well.
Capture the Crown – If you’ve read my coverage of the Crown of Shards series, my love of this spin off shouldn’t come as a surprise. You can read my full review here.
The List (♥♥♥♥♥)- My husband pulled me into the Orphan X series a couple summers ago. One of my favorite characters is Joey, who features as the main character in this short story. It was everything I wanted it to be. If the author would ever spin off a series starring Joey, I’d be first in line to pick it up.

To Fetch a Felon – First in a new cozy series from late 2020 with a talking corgi, this was a delight from start to finish. (My blog was even quoted in the “praise for book one” section of the second book!) You can read my full review of book one here and book two here. Cozy fans should NOT miss this series!

Best of 2021 – Adult Nonfiction

All of the Marvels – Again, these aren’t listed in any particular order, but if I had to pick just one favorite nonfiction book from this year, it would be this one. I didn’t expect to love this like I did – the writing is fantastic, and the comics history and stories are fascinating. You can read my full review here.
Reading While Black (♥♥♥♥♥) – I read this one for me, rather than for a blog post, so there’s no review here on the blog. But I will tell you this was FANTASTIC. It was challenging in all the best ways. The writing is engaging and conversational. This is a resource I highly recommend.
The Enneagram Guide to Waking Up – I didn’t read much nonfiction in 2021, and the bulk of what I did read was Enneagram related. You can read my full review of this resource here.

REVIEW: Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano

Summary

Finlay Donovan is watching her life slip away from her. Her next book is overdue, and she hasn’t written a word of it. She can’t afford to pay back her advance – she can’t even pay her electric bill. Her ex is threatening to pursue full custody of their kids. And he laid off the nanny she was counting on for some child-free writing time.

During a meeting with her agent, Finlay notices a woman sitting nearby, watching her. But the woman misunderstands Finlay’s conversation about her romantic suspense novels and thinks Finlay is a killer for hire. And the woman is willing to pay big money to have her husband killed.

Finlay’s curiosity is too much to ignore, so she goes to check out the husband. Just to see what kind of guy he is.

Before she really knows what is going on, the guy is dead, his wife has gone missing, and Finlay has the name of someone else to kill. This whole, weird situation is just the creative  jump start she needed to write her new book. But she’s not sure which risk is worse – the risk of being arrested and having her kids taken away or the risk of being discovered by the big, dangerous men tied to the dead body she now has in her garage.

Review

The premise of this is brilliant, and so is the execution! I haven’t had this much fun with a mystery in awhile – and I have read some excellent mysteries in the last month.  But the mysteries I read and enjoy tend to follow a pattern. And this throws the pattern right out the window. And I loved it!

I loved Finlay and the nanny, Vero. What a team they make! I loved watching Finlay get a handle on her life again, especially thanks to Vero joining their family again. And their partnership regarding the dead body was fantastic.

There are laugh-out-loud moments in this as well as a few twists that made me gasp out loud. And the epilogue is a stunning set up for the next book. I was already excited about reading another Finlay Donovan adventure, but that epilogue made book 2 a must-read for me.

Mystery and suspense fans should be sure to check out this clever, funny, captivating story. I loved it! (Language, off-page sex, sexual references, TW: references to sexual assault)
