Summary

April Claus is looking forward to having her friend, Claire, visit Santaland. Claire is still a little stunned at April’s life as Santa’s wife. But they have tons of fun activities planned for her vacation.

The first wrinkle is the reindeer strike. Not ideal a week before Christmas. Then there is a drone accident that ruined the ice sculpture contest.

And then there’s a murder.

One of April’s Santaland friends is arrested for the crime, so April has to get to the truth before the whole town turns on her friend and she spends Christmas in jail.

Review

I get such a kick out of this Christmas-themed mystery series! I love the setting, populated by elves, reindeer, and talking snowmen. The fantasy elements are more about the setting and characters than “magic,” but I enjoy this fresh take on a cozy mystery. The mystery here was good and kept me guessing all the way to the end.

I would have liked a bit more of the story anchored to April’s life as Santa’s wife and to the Claus family. But the full cast of elves opens up a lot of story ideas.

Series fans will want to pick up this new book in the Mrs. Claus Mystery series. Newcomers are probably fine starting here, although some of the setting elements and character history (like with Santa’s family) might take a little bit to make sense.

Summary

April Claus has brought Halloween to Christmastown. The kids are thrilled about the costumes and candy of course. And many of the business people are making the best of the holiday novelty. But not everyone is a fan. Someone vandalizes the greenhouse that was growing pumpkins for the holiday festivities. There have also been threats on social media. And then someone tries to kill April. When a body is found, and the killer seems to be an unlikely snow monster, April starts to feel like the Halloween celebration may be overshadowed by a killer.

Review

This was another fun mystery starring April Claus in Santaland/Christmastown. I got such a kick out of the first book, Mrs. Claus and the Santaland Slayings, that this was a must-read for me. And I was not disappointed.

I love the setting for this series – the North Pole, populated by elves and reindeer. Right from the start, this series has a different feel from the majority of cozy mysteries. And the author has done a great job with her world-building. The towns and businesses as well as the Claus family castle are well established while still giving space for future developments and sites. And the core cast of characters are a fun collection of humans and elves, not too unlike the core of any cozy – but with some reindeer and snowmen thrown in.

The mystery in this book veers off in several directions, which I enjoyed. It kept me guessing all the way to the end.

There seemed to be some hints at a future story where maybe April’s “real world” life will clash with her Christmastown one when a friend comes to visit. I can’t wait to see how that goes if that is the next story in this series.

Yes, this is a Halloween story in a Christmas setting. It seems like it wouldn’t work, but it absolutely does, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Don’t miss this fun cozy series.

Summary

April Claus is newly married to the big man himself. Nick inherited the job when his older brother died. Some day, Christopher, Chris’ son, will take over the job, but for now, Nick is holding down the holiday fort.

Less than 10 days before Christmas, Nick and the elves have plenty to do. But when an angry elf is found dead, everything is in an uproar.

Giblet had been angry about his second place finish in the ice sculpture contest. As he stormed off, he accused Nick of being a murderer. Now that Giblet is dead, his family thinks Santa killed him. Rumors are swirling around the North Pole.

As things start to look worse and worse for Nick, April feels like she has to look into things for herself. She has to find the evidence to clear her new husband’s name before Christmas is ruined for everyone.

Review

This was a delight from the very first page! The world-building for this North Pole mystery was excellent. The author had her work cut out for her. She had to craft and convey the Christmas setting while also building a mystery. And she does an fantastic job with both! (This reminds me of the Wishcraft Mysteries with the cozy mystery and the fantasy setting.)

I loved April. The whole Claus family is fascinating, really. I wanted more from April and Nick. For newlyweds, there was no chemistry between them. To be honest, though, they hardly had any scenes together thanks to the mystery and the Christmas rush. It works out well to make April wrestle with the rumors and her questions about Nick on her own, amping up the tension of the book.

The mystery was terrific. The culprit was on my radar, but not my only suspect. I needed April to put all the pieces together to be certain. I loved watching the whole thing come together.

The author has set this series up to be able to set stories both at the North Pole and in Oregon at April’s home. I can’t wait to see how the stories develop in these two distinct places, and where the overlaps come into play.

Cozy lovers and Christmas book fans should not miss this one. It was fantastic! A keeper for sure.
