REVIEW: Mac B. Kid Spy – Mac Undercover by Mac Barnett

[I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from the publisher in an online contest. All opinions are my own.]

Summary

Mac Barnett is the author of the Brixton Brothers series and the Terrible Two series for middle grade readers as well as a bunch of picture books. What you might not know is that as a kid, Mac was a spy for the Queen of England!

Mac is first called into service when something is stolen from the Crown Jewels. The case takes Mac to England, France and the Soviet Union (this happens in 1989) in search of the missing item.

Review

This is a fun, silly story for kids ready to branch out into chapter books (low to mid-elementary school). There are lots of brightly colored illustrations in blue and gold – really eye-catching. There are hilarious moments (like the redacted steps for a heist) and questionable ones (What adult wants a kid’s pair of jeans?) But I know kids are going to love this! Hand this to readers who want an funny adventure story. They won’t be disappointed. Book 2 will release at the end of this year.

REVIEW – How This Book Was Made by Mac Barnett

Summary

A book about creating books! An author (Mac Barnett) tells the story of how an idea becomes a published book. And there is a tiger with a posse, a lot of waiting, pirates, astronauts, and the Great Wall of China.

Really!

A book about creating books!

Review

This is a fun, quirky little book that explains the publication process. An idea becomes a first draft. Then there are several more drafts. Then an editor. And corrections. Then an illustrator. And on and on until a reader finally gets to enjoy it.

The book is funny and silly while also communicating the steps to publication (or the steps to finishing a piece of writing). Readers learn all about the process in a pretty memorable way.

The illustrations are fantastic. I don’t usually gravitate toward this style of art, but the pictures are too clever not to enjoy. The illustrations of the author are my favorite as they really look like Mac Barnett (except for the really long beard).

This is a great collaboration from the team behind the Brixton Brothers middle grade mystery series as well as the picture book Chloe and the Lion.

sec

Between Monsters and Marvels – Dare believes there are still monsters in the Bay but no one believes her and she is shipped off to school where she couldn’t possibly keep investigating – but she still stumbles across something that makes her question everything she’s been told. I have already pre-ordered this one! Sounds amazing – and it’s a stand alone story.
The Improbable Tales of Baskerville Hall – Book 1 in a new series. Young Arthur Conan Doyle is offered a place at Baskerville Hall, a secret school for the gifted, where he makes new friends and finds mysteries that makes at least one person want to see him expelled – or worse. This is getting a lot of praise for being a creative reimagining of the Sherlock Holmes universe. I’m intrigued!
The Name Drop – A corporate heir apparent and an intern find themselves in one another’s spots during their summer internship – and they decide to keep up the charade because it give her the chance to make some connections that can help her get into college and it gives him the chance to have a summer blending in with other teens away from his controlling father. This sounds fantastic!

Books for Adults

Fall of Ruin and Wrath (Hardcover) – A woman who uses her flawless intuition for survival in a hostile world meets a prince who she senses will be someone very special to her – until he becomes her doom. I”m intrigued by this one, too.
A Market of Dreams and Destiny (Trade Paperback) – Once a boy sold into servitude for the secret and magical Untermarkt, Deri now has a chance to buy his freedom and make a name for himself, but the cost might be too much, including a chance at love. (The cover of this always makes me think it’s part of the Last Binding series by Freya Marske, but it is not,)
Murder Most Royal (Hardcover) – Book 3 in the Her Majesty the Queen Investigates series. The queen is once again pulled into a mystery when a severed hand is found and she recognizes the signet ring still on one of the fingers. I still haven’t tried this series, but I get a kick out of the premise.
My Rogue to Ruin (Trade Paperback) – Book 4 in the Wild Wynchesters series (this seems to be the first book in the series with an illustrated cover). The Wynchesters are trying to unmask a forger.
Star Trek: Picard’s Academy, Vol 1 (Comic, releasing Sept. 13) – First in a new comic book line about Captain Jean Luc Picard’s time at Star Fleet Academy. How fun!

SATURDAY SMORGASBORD: April Fools’ Day

Happy April Fools’ Day! I have never loved this “holiday,” especially as a teacher. But I do like to READ about pranks and pranksters. Here are a few prankster books to enjoy this month:

My Lucky Day – Hilarious picture book about a hungry fox who finds a pig on his front porch. How lucky! By the time it is all over, though, it just might be the pig who is the lucky one!

April Fools’, Mr. Todd! – I haven’t had a chance to read this one yet, but I LOVE Judy Moody. This early reader series with Judy and her friends is perfect for kids in lower elementary grades who are growing as readers and are ready to try some longer stories. The illustrations are full color and fantastic. I can’t wait to read this one!

The Terrible Two – A prankster arrives at his new school ready to show the other kids his skills. But there is a pretty impressive prankster already there. Is this school big enough for TWO master pranksters? I get a huge kick out of this series by Mac Barnett. There are two books already with a third slated for 2018. Great for fans of the Wimpy Kid books.

The Last Boy at St. Edith’s – This book about the only boy at an all-girls school (the school tried to go co-ed and it didn’t work, but his mom teaches at the school, so he is stuck) who tries to prank his way to expulsion is on my TBR! I’ve been trying to get to this one for awhile. This might be the perfect time to read this one!

Codename Zero – A prankster is recruited to help a secret government agency. This is on my TBR, too, This is the first book in a series. I love books where the grown ups have to seek out a kid to save the day!

BOOK NEWS: March 14, 2017

March is shaping up to be a great month for new books! Here are some of the books releasing this week:

Books for Kids

Charlotte the Scientist Is Squished – Poor Charlotte! She has so many brothers and sisters, there’s no where for her to do her science experiments! Maybe she can use science to help her solve her problem.
The Lemonade Problem – Peg + Cat’s 5th problem solving adventure. These are terrific picture books for home or school!
Out of School and Into Nature – A picture book biography of naturalist Anna Comstock
Out of Wonder – Just in time for Poetry month in April is this book of poems celebrating poets!
Triangle – Two words: Mac Barnett. If you’ve never tried one of his books, you are missing out on a ton of fun. I am very eager to read this one about Triangle who is planning to play a trick on his friend, Square.
First Big Book of Weather – As a teacher, I loved these books for students because there is so much to look at in each one. If you have a budding meteorologist at your house or in your classroom, check this one out.
President Donald Trump – If you are looking for a picture book about our new president, there are several coming out this spring. This is just one example of the books available.
April Fools’, Mr. Todd – Looks like this is book 8 in the Judy Moody and Friends series. I HIGHLY recommend this series for new readers growing in their “endurance” skills of reading longer books. The format is the same size as an early reader, but the story is longer. The adventures are fun, the color pictures are eye-catching, and this introduces readers to the characters they would meet in the Judy Moody and/or Stink Moody chapter books as they mature as readers. In this story, Judy is planning an April Fools prank for her teacher, Mr. Todd.
The Capital Catch – Book 13 in the Ballpark Mystery series. Great for mystery and/or baseball fans!
Dark Shadows – Chicken Squad, book 4. The chickens from Cronin’s JJ Tully series have their own series now, perfect for new chapter book readers. I haven’t been able to keep up on this series, but the first one was a hoot! I’d love to check out the rest of the books to see if they are as funny as the first one.
Zoey and Sassafras: Dragons and Marshmallows/Merhorses and Bubbles/Monsters and Mold – Zoe and her cat, Sassafras, help magical creatures in their back yard using science and mystery-solving skills. These look darling!! I can’t wait to read these. They look perfect for early elementary students moving into chapter books.
A Boy Called Bat – A boy on the autism spectrum, nicknamed Bat, wants to keep a baby skunk as a pet. This book has been getting a lot of positive buzz.

In the Spot Light – Book 2 in the Pages Between Us series about two girls who keep in touch during middle school by passing a notebook back and forth (Did any of you do that? I would love to read this second one; there is a Battle of the Books at the center of the story.

Bravo: Poems About Amazing Hispanics – Expand your understanding of history with these poems about the contributions of Hispanics to the story of our world.
The End of Oz – Book 4 in the Dorothy Must Die series. If you want to read a twist on the Wizard of Oz story, you might enjoy this darker version of Dorothy and the crew from Oz. I would definitely start with book one and read these in order!
A Psalm for Lost Girls – To the world, Tess was an honest-to-goodness saint. To her sister, though, Tess was just a girl, and she wants her sister to be remembered for all the things she was on her own, outside of the miracles and the fervor. But the truth might not be that simple
