Hidden Truths (Older Middle Grade) – Something new from Elly Swartz.  A best friendship is in jeopardy when Eric can’t be sure Dani’s accident isn’t his fault.
The Lotus Flower Champion – Instead of being able to focus on her mother’s final days, a young woman is stranded on an island with strangers as Thai mythology comes to life around them. This one is on my list!
People to Follow – A group of social media influencers are invited to an island for a 3-week reality show “off the grid.” But when none of the crew arrives, and one of the influencers is killed, it becomes obvious that something more menacing is going on. Yes, please!!
The Rosewood Hunt – Four teens are on an unexpected treasure hunt when Lily’s grandmother dies and her fortune goes missing. Fascinating!

Books for Adults


A Dish Best Served Hot (Trade Paperback) – Book 2 in the Vega Family Love Stories series. High school sweethearts reconnect years later when she discovers his family is what has put the LGBTQ+ youth shelter at risk. This series is new to me, but I have both books in my cart right now!
Being Henry: The Fonz… and Beyond (Hardcover) – A memoir.

Myrtle, Means, and Opportunity – Book 5 in the Myrtle Hardcastle Mystery series. Myrtle and her governess are stranded on an island with a thief if not a killer. I really enjoyed the first book in this series! Can’t wait to get caught up to this one.
Britannica’s Encyclopedia Infographica (Older Middle Grade) – I love infographics!!

Emergency Contact (Trade Paperback) – Something new from Lauren Layne.  A woman with a concussion ends up stuck on an out-of-town trip with her ex as her “emergency contact” to monitor her. Yes, please!
Iris Kelly Doesn’t Date (Trade Paperback – LGBTQ+) – Book 3 in the Bright Falls series. A romance writer on deadline with no ideas agrees to fake date her last (disastrous) one night stand. I’m intrigued by this one.
It’s a Date (Again) (Trade Paperback) – A woman with amnesia finds three men at her bedside, each claiming to be her boyfriend. She just can’t remember which of them she was going to say yes to marrying. So her friends suggest she date them all again. I pre-ordered this weeks ago!
Murder in Drury Lane (Hardcover) – Book 2 in the Lady Worthing Mystery series. Lady Worthing is drawn into a murder at the Drury Lane Theatre
The Marvel Cinematic Universe: An Official Timeline (Hardcover) – Movie stills and plot descriptions lay out the MCU in timeline order. This looks gorgeous, but it’s on the pricey side, along the lines of the Art of books for various Marvel movies.

Detective Duck: The Case of the Strange Splash – Detective Duck works with her friends on environmental problems that crop up at their pond.

Books for Older Kids/Teens/Young Adults


Lost Legends: The Fixer Upper – Book 3 in Disney’s Lost Legends series (after books about Flynn Rider and Aladdin). In an effort to get Kristoff to relate to other children, his adoptive troll family sends him to school. But it’s not a great fit for Kristoff, especially with his childhood bully there. He hopes he can win the ice harvester competition and that will help him to fit in.
The Queen’s Crown (e-book, October 19) – Book 1 in the League of Rulers series from the author of the Knights of the Realm series. Sabine seeks to avenge her sister’s murder by trying to take her place in the kingdom where she was about to wed, but the king is distractingly appealing even while she tries to dodge a killer in the court. I cannot wait to read this!!!
Thin Air – A teen invited to compete in a contest that could pull her and her family out of poverty forever boards a plane to Europe with the other contestants who then start to die on the plane. A locked-room mystery on an airplane? Stunning!

10 Things That Never Happened (Trade Paperback) – Jonathan has determined it’s time to let Sam go from his job, but when Sam bumps his head and accidentally implies he has amnesia, Jonathan feels like he can’t fire him. But as the two spend time together, Sam still faking amnesia, the feelings between them become more and more complicated. Yeah, this one is on the list!
Dragged to the Wedding (Trade Paperback) – A closeted gay man needs a date to a family wedding, so a drag queen agrees to help him out. Yes, please!
Friends Don’t Fall in Love (Trade Paperback) – The latest from Erin Hahn. A former country star reaches out to her ex’s  best friend to help her reclaim her lost career. This is a book for *adults* so readers should remember this will be spicier than her YA stories.
Home at Night (Hardcover) – Book 5 in the awesome Mercy Carr Mystery series. A supposedly haunted manor becomes a site for a murder. I love this series and can’t wait to read this new book.
Let’s Get Quizzical (Trade Paperback) – High school exes have a second chance at love when they are paired up on a televised quiz show. This sounds fun!
One Christmas Morning (Trade Paperback) – A woman hiding from past heartbreak during Christmas inhabits the lives of several of her friends in a Christmas miracle designed to help her face her past. Yes!!
Stalking Around the Christmas Tree (Hardcover) – Book 4 in the Christmas Tree Farm Mystery series. Holly is sleuthing again when a visiting dancer is killed right before Christmas.

Diana and the Hero’s Journey – The girl who will some day become Wonder Woman discovers the story of the first Greek hero, Hero.
Trouble Finds Plum! – Book 3 in a series about a young peacock named Plum. When the Athensville Zoo is overrun by raccoons, Plum has a plan to save the day.
Huda F Cares? (Graphic Novel) – Book 2 in this YA graphic novel series about Huda. This time Huda and her family are going to Disney World, but the forced togetherness with her sisters and the ways her family stands out in Florida are challenging.

Better Hate Than Never (Trade Paperback) – Book 2 in the Wilmot Sisters series after Two Wrongs Make a Right. Childhood enemies discover an unexpected spark in this modern take on Taming of the Shrew. I have book 1, based on Much Ado About Nothing, on my TBR, and now I think I need to bump it up the list because those two Shakespeare plays are my favorites!
The Holiday Mix-Up (Trade Paperback) – Basically While You Were Sleeping with fake dating – and I am HERE FOR IT!
Let It Crow Let It Crow Let It Crow (Hardcover) – Book 34 in the Meg Langslow series. To help out a friend, Meg gets pulled into a televised blacksmithing competition at Christmas time. Yes, please!
Love Interest (Trade Paperback) – After Casey is passed over for a job, she has to work with the person who got it instead of her – the son of the board chairman.
The Mis-Arrangement of Sana Saeed (Trade Paperback) – Sana’s mother won’t let her be named guardian of her autistic younger brother unless she is married, so she agrees to an arranged marriage, despite her feelings for an old friend (and family enemy) who has resurfaced in her life.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Illyrian Enigma (Graphic Novel) – A graphic novel bridging season one and two of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Sword Catcher (Hardcover) – The prince’s body double and a magic-wielding physician get drawn into the criminal underworld of their kingdom where each is offered what they truly want most. But they uncover a conspiracy that leads them to question everything. This sounds amazing!
‘Twas the Bite Before Christmas (Hardcover) – Book 28 in the delightful  Andy Carpenter series. Andy defends a man who adopted his dogs from the Tara Foundation when he’s accused of murder. I’ll be reviewing this one soon!

The Evers: Forever Twelve – From Stacy McAnulty. Ivy shows up at a boarding school for exceptional kids and encounters the Evers – individuals who look 12, but who are centuries old. And they think Ivy could help them with their curse. I will read anything Stacy McAnulty writes, so I am all in on this one!
Murder at the Old Willow Boarding School – The Choose Your Own Adventure series takes on a mystery in this book where the reader realizes they are dead and they try to solve their own murder. That’s a pretty dark plot for a kids book, but I am intrigued by it, nonetheless.
Unicorn for a Day – Book 18 in this delightful comics series starring Phoebe and her unicorn friend, Marigold. This time, Phoebe and Marigold switch places so Phoebe can see what it is really like to be a unicorn.
Is There Anybody Out There?: The Search for Extraterrestrial Life, from Amoebas to Aliens – Book 2 in the Wild Thing series by Laura Krantz, after The Search for Sasquatch. This time, Krantz explores extraterrestrials.
Eight Dates and Nights – A Jewish teen stuck at her grandmother’s house finds the only other Jewish teen in town to be an unexpected friend – and maybe something more.
Bishop Takes King – Kate accidentally trades bags with a kid named Milo. But Milo’s bag contains something Kingpin would kill to possess, so Kate has to find Milo and save the day. A Kate Bishop story, written by Ashley Poston? Yes, please!

Books for Adults


The Hurricane Wars (Hardcover) – First in a new series. Talasyn hides the secret of her light magic, but when Prince Alaric tries to destroy her to protect his kingdom of shadow magic, their conflict creates a magical force never seen before. This sounds fascinating!
Last Word to the Wise (Trade Paperback) – Book 2 in the Christie Bookshop Mystery series following Dead and Gondola.  When Meg’s blind date is later murdered, she becomes the prime suspect since she was the last person to see him alive.
A Little Magic (Trade Paperback) – First in a new series. A professional hockey player has a second chance at love. I am intrigued by the description of this that says it takes place over 9 Christmas Eves and 8 nights of Hannukah.
Maybe Once Maybe Twice (Trade Paperback) – At two very different times in her life, Maggie told someone “If we’re still single at 35, we should get married.” And now both of those men have showed up.
One Puzzling Afternoon (Trade Paperback) – In 1951, a girl named Lucy befriends Edie and then disappears. In 2018, Edie, who has started experiencing dementia, believes she has seen Lucy. Her family doesn’t believe her, but Edie is certain she is the key to the truth about Lucy. Fascinating.
The Other Princess (Trade Paperback) – A kidnapped African princess is rescued from slavery and “presented” to Queen Victoria as a “gift” and raised in Victorian society. Based on the true story of Queen Victoria’s goddaughter Sarah Forbes Bonetta.
Snowed in for Christmas (Trade Paperback) – A major snowstorm leads Becca’s grouchy-but-sexy neighbor to offer her shelter to wait out the storm.
The Takedown (Trade Paperback) – The FBI asks an undercover CIA agent to infiltrate a crime family when her little sister gets engaged to a member of the family.
The Trouble with Tinsel (Trade Paperback) – A couple who were also a screenwriting team haven’t seen each other since their breakup. When one of their scripts is optioned, they have to work together once again. And when the movie’s star thinks they are still engaged and wants them on set for their romantic advice, they have to fake the old chemistry as well.
Wreck the Halls (Trade Paperback) – The children of former rock stars are asked to help get the band back together for one final show right before Christmas.
Holy Runaways: Rediscovering Faith After Being Burned by Religion (Hardcover) – As church attendance continues to decline, the author – a psychotherapist – examines the stories of “holy runaways” and looks for ways for them to come back to faith

It’s the last full week of October. I don’t know about you, but I have found a TON of books this month I want to read. This is the perfect time to start building my holiday wish list. Let’s see what new releases catch your eye this week:

 

Books for Adults


The Bookshop of Secrets (Trade Paperback) – A young woman in town to uncover long-buried family secrets finds herself torn between letting people into her life and keeping her protective boundaries up. I’m intrigued by this one.
No Plan B (Hardcover) – Book 27 in the Jack Reacher series. Reacher witnesses a death that while ruled an accident is anything but. When a second “accident” occurs, Reacher is on the case. We fell in love with the Reacher series on Amazon this year, and I’m excited to read some of the books for myself.
Photo Finished (Trade Paperback) – First in a new Snapshot of NYC Mystery series. Photographer Liz Spyers stumbles into a brilliant career opportunity, but before the event is over someone will be dead and her new boss will be the prime suspect. I’ll be reviewing this one soon.
The Stand-Up Groomsman (Trade Paperback) – Wedding attendants at odds with each other try to put their differences aside to get their friends happily wed.
A Trace of Poison (Hardcover) – Book 2 in the Phyllida Bright Mystery series. Agatha Christie’s housekeeper stars in this series, and in this installment, there’s a murder at a writing contest where Agatha is one of the hosts. I am intrigued by this series!

Built to Last (Trade Paperback) – An adult romance from Erin Hahn. Former child stars team up for a renovation show, each looking for something including a second chance at love. I’ll be reviewing this one soon!
Partners in Crime (Trade Paperback) – While her matchmaker is starting to think Mira will never find a match, she runs into Naveen, the first match she dismissed abruptly. But the two find themselves working together, initially as Naveen’s law firm helps Mira with her aunt’s affairs, but later as they dodge crime bosses and jewel thieves as they try to figure out what all Mira’s family was into. I am so stoked to read this one! I’ll be reviewing it soon.
Poster Girl (Hardcover) – Imprisoned with the fallen dystopian regime called The Delegation, Sonya has a chance at redemption – and freedom – if she can find a girl kidnapped by the old regime. I am intrigued by this one!
Beyond the Enneagram: An Invitation to Experience a More Centered Life with God (Hardcover) – From the author of Self to Lose, Self to Find comes this new Enneagram resource that focuses on the Spiritual Center. I’ll be reviewing this one soon.
Death of a Dream: Resurrecting Purpose When Life Doesn’t Go as Planned (Trade Paperback) – The author of this book spoke at our church this summer, tying his story to the story of Joseph in the Old Testament.
Madly Deeply: The Diaries of Alan Rickman (Hardcover) – A collection of personal diary entries from 1993 through his death in 2016.
Tom Felton, Beyond the Wand (Hardcover) – A memoir.
We Wrote Your Name in Color (Trade Paperback, October 19) – A memoir of a couple who said yes when his sister and her husband wrote a will listing them as guardians for their children – and who never expected a murder/suicide to leave them parenting those children through the unthinkable.

The Search for Sasquatch – First in a new nonfiction series. I’ll be reviewing this one soon!
Twelfth Grade Night (Graphic Novel) – First in a new series. At her new school where she can dress how she wants, Vi falls for Orsino, but he is in love with Olivia and asks Vi to help him get her attention, assuming Vi isn’t into guys. I have requested this from the library – sounds like a fun Twelfth Night retelling!

Books for Adults


A Christmas Candy Killing (Hardcover) – First in a new Killer Chocolate Mystery series. Twin sisters who own a mystery bookstore with themed chocolates become murder suspects when a friend dies and their chocolates are found nearby. I love trying out new mystery series – especially book-themed ones! Can’t wait to give this a try.
Dashing Through the Snowbirds (Hardcover) – Book 32 in the fabulous Meg Langslow mystery series. When Meg plays Christmas host to some Canadian programmers working on a project with her brother’s company, she ends up playing investigator too when the programmers’ boss is murdered. I’ll be reviewing this one soon!
Dinosaur Philosophy (Hardcover gift book) – A new @DinosAndComics collection!
The Plot and the Pendulum (Hardcover) – Book 13 in the Library Lovers Mystery series by Jenn McKinlay. When Lindsey and the Crafternooners discover a skeleton that might be linked to a 30-year-old missing persons case, they start looking for a killer. I have this one on hold already at the library!
Santa’s Little Yelpers (Hardcover) – Book 26 in the delightful Andy Carpenter mystery series by David Rosenfelt. When a new Tara Foundation employee asks Andy to represent him in court because he found out a witness who once testified against him was lying, Andy agrees to take on the case. But when the witness is murdered and his client is arrested, Andy’s found more work than he bargained for. I’ll be reviewing this one soon!
Secret Lives (Trade Paperback) – A former FBI agent-turned-landlady finds herself investigating a murder when one of her boarders is killed. I pre-ordered this months ago – I can’t wait to read it!
The Socialite’s Guide to Murder (Hardcover) – First in a new Pinnacle Hotel Mystery series. Because of her agoraphobia, Evelyn hasn’t left her father’s hotel in over a year. But when a killer strikes and her best friend is twisted up in the case, Evelyn and her crush from the hotel staff team up to find the truth. Sounds awesome!
The Spare Man (Trade Paperback) – Inventor, heiress, and sleuth, Tesla must investigate a murder on the space liner where she was enjoying her honeymoon because Security has arrested her husband for the crime. Sounds fantastic!

Bhai For Now – Twins separated at birth meet up at school and decide to swap places to get to know the parent they’ve missed out on all their lives. This sounds fantastic! I love The Parent Trap.
How to Heal a Gryphon – When her older brother is kidnapped by witches while her parents are away, Giada has to find a way to rescue him.
In Myrtle Peril (Older Middle Grade) – Book 4 in the Myrtle Hardcastle Mystery series. Myrtle’s latest case has her father in the cross hairs. Hospitalized in the middle of a case himself, Myrtle’s father witnesses a murder. Now Myrtle has to solve it before her father becomes another victim. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, and I can’t wait to read this new story.
Sisterhood of Sleuths – When a box of vintage Nancy Drew mysteries is left at her mom’s thrift shop, Maizy discovers a picture in the box of her grandmother as a girl, along with two other young women. When her grandmother insists the photo is NOT of her, Maizy starts investigating. Yes, please! I love middle grade mysteries, and this one sounds fantastic.
By the Time You Read This I’ll Be Gone (Murder She Wrote) – First in a new series for teens. When Beatrice Fletcher’s best friend goes missing, she decides to solve the mystery herself just like her great-aunt Jessica, the mystery writer. I’d give this a shot just to see how it’s put together – sounds interesting!
The Christmas Clash – A new holiday romance from Suzanne Park. The children of rival restaurant owners team up to try to save the mall where they work in order to save both businesses.
Prince of Song & Sea – First in a new series of books focused on the princes in Disney’s classic tales. Have you ever wondered what Eric’s story was before he encountered the Little Mermaid? Now is your chance to find out!
Scions – A prequel to the Starcrossed trilogy. A daughter of Zeus and a son of Apollo are drawn together into a cycle of destruction that has already engulfed their ancestors.

Books for Adults


All I Want for Christmas (Trade Paperback) – When two singers on a TV competition make sparks on duet week, the powers that be insist on them keeping up the ruse that they are a couple in real life. Unfortunately, they can’t stand each other!
A Cat Café Christmas (Trade Paperback) – A veterinarian has to set aside her reservations and trust the marketing guru who wants to help her save her cat café.
Extra Witchy (Trade Paperback) – Book 3 in the Fix-It Witches series. Leanne decides to run for city council, but it looks like she needs the right husband if she wants to launch a successful political career. But Trevor hardly seems like the right choice considering his long list of failures. I have book one for this series on my TBR.
Out of Love (Trade Paperback) – Book 2 in The Switch. When a farmer and a businessman discover they are twins, they decide to switch lives (Strictly Business). But when the farmer tries posing as the businessman, he discovers a plot to take down his brother’s company. I have this series on my TBR list, too.
Station Eternity (Trade Paperback) – First in the Midsolar Murders series. An amateur detective has fled Earth for an alien space station where she thinks she can avoid the murder cases that seemed to find her on Earth. But once she’s on the space station, visitors start dying. I can’t wait to dig into this one! It sounds right up my alley – scifi AND mystery!
When Life Gives You Vampires (Trade Paperback) – When a simple date leaves her with vampire fangs, Lily has to team up with Tristan to save them both. I already bought this one – I am fascinated by some of the personal aspects of this story.
You’re a Mean One, Matthew Prince (Trade Paperback) – Book 2 in the Boy Meets Boy series. Spoiled Matthew Prince discovers the limits of his parents’ good will when his latest PR disaster means they ship him off to stay with his grandparents for the holidays. He agrees to help coordinate a charity gala in the hopes of an “early parole” from his exile. This sounds delightful – and Hallmark movie-ish!
The God Shot: 100 Snapshots of God’s Character in Scripture (Nonfiction) – A 100-day devotional focused on passages from the New Testament that reveal God’s character.

It’s the last week of October. In some ways it has just zoomed by. I’m ready to start thinking about Thanksgiving and Christmas, though, so that’s all right with me. Here are some of the new books releasing this week that have caught my eye. [Due to supply chain issues, release dates are subject to change. It’s happening so much right now, I don’t have time to reset all the books to their new dates. I’ll note the change when I see them. The bottom line is, order your holiday books early!]

Slothy Claus (Now releasing 11/2) – What will the children of the world do when Slothy Claus doesn’t deliver their presents on time?
The Hunger Heroes: Missed Meal Mayhem (Graphic Novel – now releasing 11/9) – I have been waiting SO LONG to tell you about this DELIGHTFUL book – and now we have to wait even longer. You do not want to miss this superhero story where hungry kids are saved by some unusual heroes. Go ahead and just pre-order it now for your early chapter book reader – you can thank me later. The Powers: Haven’s Secret – First in a new series by the star of Supergirl on the CW, Melissa Benoist, and her sister, Jessica Benoist. Twins with super powers are whisked away to a sanctuary where one feels at home and the other can’t wait to get away.
Cold War Correspondent (Nathan Hale’s Hazardous Tales – graphic novel, nonfiction) – Book 11 in this fantastic nonfiction graphic novel series. This one focuses on Marguerite Higgins and the Korean War.
Little People Big Dreams Treasury (Nonfiction – now releasing 11/9) – Collection of 50 biographies.
Who Were the Navajo Code Talkers?
We Light Up the Sky – Three teens struggle to be heard when an alien comes to Earth and takes the form of one girl’s dead cousin and then proceeds to cause trouble.

 

Books for Adults – Fiction


All the Feels (Trade Paperback) – The latest from Olivia Dade. A therapist hired to keep a TV star in line finds herself falling for him. This is on my review list.
As the Wicked Watch (Hardcover) – First in a new series. An up-and-coming reporter moves to Chicago and finds herself in the middle of a series of murders of Black women. The cases in this one feel dark for me, personally, but I am completely in love with the description of the main character here. Thriller fans should be sure to check this one out.
The Christmas Bookshop (Hardcover) – A woman without a job or many options moves in with her sister and family and takes on a job trying to revitalize a charming, but disorganized, bookshop. I’m intrigued by the family dynamics of this one.

Donut Fall in Love (Trade Paperback) – A grieving actor and a baker have a meet-cute over specialty donuts. So when he signs up for a celebrity baking show, he knows just who to call in for help. This sounds darling.
Duke Actually
 (Trade Paperback) – A new story set in the world of A Princess for Christmas. A notorious rake and a no-nonsense New Yorker hit it off when they meet to prepare for the wedding of their best friends. I adored the first book in this series, so I am eager to read this one. This is on my review list.
Enemy You Gnocchi (Mass Market Paperback) – Book 3 in the Italian Chef Mystery series. Tessa is sleuthing when a new grinch in town is murdered and a friend is the prime suspect.
Gated Prey (Trade Paperback) – Book 3 in the Eve Ronin series. When a sting operation turns deadly, Eve starts to wonder if they truly “solved the case” or if there is more going on than anyone realizes. Thriller fans should check this one out.
Getaway with Murder (Mass Market Paperback) – First in the new Mountain Lodge Mystery series from the author of the Paw Enforcement series as well as several others. Misty’s relaunch of both her life and an old mountain lodge is in danger when there’s a murder at the first event of her new business. I love trying out new mystery series! I have this one on my list.
Grave Reservations (Hardcover) – A sometimes-psychic travel agent teams up on a cold case with the detective she saved from death with an impulsive flight reservation change. This is on my review list!
Hollywood Heroine (Trade Paperback) – Book 5 in the fun and quirky Heroine Complex series. Aveda and Evie’s superhero adventures are about to hit the small screen. But evil is lurking around LA, and the two heroes are about to have their hands full.
It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Murder (Mass Market Paperback) – Book 3 in the Catering Hall Mystery series. In the midst of a full slate of holiday events, Mia’s going to have to find time to solve a murder.
Murder at the Mistletoe Ball (Mass Market Paperback) – Book 6 in the Ferrera Family Mystery series. Alberta’s estranged daughter comes to town for help looking for her missing son who ends up the prime suspect in a murder.
Sleigh Bells Ring (Trade Paperback) – Annie has to settle for being the caretaker for her family’s former ranch, but her job is in jeopardy, first because she takes in her orphaned niece and nephew without permission and second when the new owners plan to sell the ranch.
Star Trek Coda: Ashes of Tomorrow (Trade Paperback) – Book 2 in this new Star Trek trilogy that unites Picard, Sisko, Dax, and Riker along with their crews. I have this whole series on my Christmas list. Book 3 will release in November. making this a perfect holiday choice.
Strangers on a Skein (Hardcover) – Book 4 in the Black Sheep and Co mystery series. Phoebe and the Black Sheep are on the case when murder strikes the Farmers’ and Crafts Market.
A Thorn in the Saddle (Mass Market Paperback) – Book 3 in the terrific Cowboys of California series. The fairy-tale foundation for this book is Beauty and the Beast, which is a favorite of mine. While Jesse’s behavior can be beastly at times, perhaps a beauty can help him smooth out his rough edges. I’ll be reviewing this one soon.
To the Tome of Murder (Mass Market Paperback) – Book 7 in the Beyond the Page Bookstore Mystery series. As Thanksgiving approaches, Addie has her hands full with a murder.
