Happy almost 2024! Here are some of the books releasing this week.

Books for Kids


Owl Diaries: Eva for President – Book 19 in this delightful early chapter book series. Eva runs for class president.
Wings of Fire: Winter Turning (Graphic Novel) – A graphic novel adaptation of book 7 in the Wings of Fire series. This is the middle book in my favorite five-book story arc in this series. Winter the Icewing is the central character in this book. Series fans should not miss out on this one! I know I have mine pre-ordered already.

Books for Adults


On the Plus Side (Trade Paperback) – A woman who prefers to fade into the background is nominated for her favorite makeover show. Yes, please!
Public Anchovy #1 (Mass Market Paperback) – Book 3 in the Deep Dish Mystery series. Delilah and her friends get trapped in a mansion with a killer.
The Secret of the Lady’s Maid (Hardcover) – Book 7 in the Useful Woman/Rosalind Thorne Mystery series. Rosalind and Adam are investigating when they discover a young woman, estranged from her family because of her relationship with Rosalind’s maid, who seems to be suffering from arsenic poisoning. I have enjoyed this series from the beginning – looking forward to getting caught up!

Star Trek Lower Decks: U.S.S. Cerritos Crew Handbook – A guide to the USS Cerritos from Star Trek Lower Decks. Yes, please!

Housebroke (Trade Paperback) – A wealthy property developer and a homeless dog foster mom share a house while he flips it. This sounds so fun!
Disabling Leadership: A Practical Theology for the Broken Body of Christ (Nonfiction) – A colleague is part of the team who put this resource together for churches looking to grow in their theology and practice around disability and the Church.

Mercy Watson Is Missing! – Book 7 in the Tales from Deckawoo Drive series. Mercy Watson has gone missing and her whole community is trying to find her. These books – a follow up to the Mercy Watson series – are great fun. I can’t wait to read this one! I already have this on hold at the library.

Books for Adults


The Fairytale Life of Dorothy Gale (Trade Paperback) – When Dee’s life implodes, she heads to Dublin to participate in a writing program and find a new life. I am looking forward to reading this one!
The Fake Mate (Trade Paperback) – A paranormal romance about two wolf shifters fake dating? Yes, please.
Raiders of the Lost Heart (Trade Paperback) – Rival archaeologists head to Mexico for a dig where thieves are prowling around their dig site. This sounds fun!
A River of Golden Bones (Hardcover) – Book one in the Golden Court series. A secret twin must protect their sister and kingdom when an evil sorceress returns with a sleeping curse. This sounds fascinating!
The Second Chance Year (Trade Paperback) – After her life implodes (it’s a trend this week), a woman gets a do-over of the last year where she sees the red flags – and potential love interest – she missed the first time around. Fun!
Sniffing Out Murder (Trade Paperback) – First in a new series. A children’s book author – and her bloodhound – are murder suspects.
This Spells Love (Trade Paperback) – When a spell to forget her ex goes awry, Gemma has to convince her former best friend – who doesn’t remember her – to kiss her in order to set things right.

Wings of Fire: Moon Rising (Graphic Novel) – A graphic novel adaptation of Moon Rising, the first book in the second Wings of Fire series. This is my favorite of the three story arcs in the Wings of Fire universe (so far). I have already pre-ordered this one.
What Was Reconstruction?  – Another great non-fiction book from the folks at WhoHQ.

Books for Adults


The Heretic Royal (Trade Paperback) – Book 3 in the Scarred Earth Saga, this one focused on Ainsley. I have adored the first two books in this series, and pre-ordered this almost a year ago. I have already read this one, so you will get a full review soon.
Honeymoons Can Be Hazardous (Mass Market Paperback) – Book 4 in the Amish Matchmaker Mystery series. Millie’s best friend becomes a murder suspect when her ex’s new wife is killed.
The Secret of the Lost Pearls (Hardcover) – Book 6 in the Rosalind Thorne Mystery series. Rosalind is asked to help a lady find a missing pearl necklace. Her husband believes it was stolen by her sister. But as Rosalind starts investigating she discovers secrets on top of secrets in this family. I’ll be reviewing this one soon!
Vinyl Resting Place (Mass Market Paperback) – First in a new Record Shop Mystery series. Three sisters open a coffee/record shop and find a dead body in their supply closet.

Stacey’s Remarkable Books (Picture Book) – Stacey Abrams’ picture book about a girl whose love of library day spreads when she helps another student who struggles to read in English.
On the Corner of Chocolate Avenue: How Milton Hershey Brought Milk Chocolate to America (Nonfiction Picture Book) – A picture book biography of Milton Hershey.
Bookstore Bunnies (Early Reader) – The bookstore bunnies help their friends find books for every need.

Books for Adults


Star Trek: Discovery: Adventures in the 32nd Century (Graphic Novel) – A comics collection starring Grudge, Adira, Detmer, and Linus from Star Trek Discovery. I have the individual comics for the four stories told here, and I enjoyed them!
Star Trek: The Original Series: Harm’s Way – Kirk and his crew are on a mission to find a missing scientist.

Owl Diaries: Eva in the Band – Eva and her friends try to put together a band to perform at a music festival. This is such a great early chapter book series!

Books for Older Kids/Teens/Young Adults


Lumara – A mortal, skeptical of the magical Mystics, enters their world for a wedding and soon finds herself the prime suspect when the Mystics fall into a mysterious coma. This is one of the few fiction books I put on my Christmas list this year. Can’t wait to read this one!
This Cursed Crown – Sequel to These Feathered Flames. Twin sisters, separated during a transition of power in their kingdom fight their way back to one another. These books sound right up my alley!

Books for Adults


Feel the Bern (Trade Paperback) – First in a new Bernie Sanders mystery series. Bernie Sanders and his young intern are drawn into a murder investigation. This sounds hilarous!
Frozen Detective (Trade Paperback) – Book 2 in the Piper and Porter mystery series. Piper and Porter go undercover at the behest of a doctor’s wife who wants them to investigate recent threats on her husbands life, but they end up investigating a murder.
Hard Day for a Hangover (Hardcover) – Book 3 in the Sunshine Vicram series. Sherrif Sunshine Vicram has her hands full with personal drama on top of a series of missing women. This series is on my TBR.
Last Circle of Love (Trade Paperback) – The new Lutheran pastor teams up with the women of the Naomi Circle to create a fundraiser with a chance to really help the church survive. But not everyone thinks their idea for a “recipe” book to help with romance is a good idea. This sounds fascinating!
To Get to the Other Side (Trade Paperback) – Bear’s sisters were the ones who posted the ad to rent out his spare room, but he agrees to let Trixie move in. Who knew co-parenting her rescue chicken could lead to feelings beyond the platonic?
Twice in a Lifetime (Trade Paperback) – A woman flees to a small town after a difficult year and starts getting text messages from the future – from a husband she doesn’t know. Fascinating!
Witcha Gonna Do? (Trade Paperback) – A non-magical woman accidentally messes up her sister’s spell, cursing her family. And the only person who can help her break the curse is the arrogant jerk she’s been trying to avoid. This could be fun!
How to Meet Your Self (Paperback Workbook) – From the author of How to Do the Work comes this workbook for self-discovery and improvement. I have already pre-ordered this one!
The Intentional Year: Simple Rhythms for Finding Freedom, Peace, and Purpose (Trade Paperback) – An invitation to choose to live on purpose.

Wings of Fire: The Brightest Night (Graphic Novel) – The fifth book of the original Wings of Fire series releases in graphic novel form this week. I pre-ordered this weeks ago. I am really enjoying the stories in this format!
What Was the Harlem Renaissance?
Here’s to Us (LGBTQ+) – The long-awaited sequel to What If It’s Us (♥♥♥♥½). Ben and Arthur keep running into each other even though they have both moved on into new relationships. The frequent run-ins leave them wondering “What if….”

 

Books for Adults


An Unlikely Duchess (Mass Market Paperback) – A marriage of convenience could turn to love for a young woman whose last hope is an old marriage contract and for a duke who needs a proper wife to help his debuting niece.
Death by the Finish Line (Mass Market Paperback) – Book 5 in the Abby McCree Mystery series. Abby is helping put on a charity 5K when there’s a murder and a friend’s brother becomes the prime suspect.
Star Trek Discovery: The Book of Grudge (Hardcover Gift Book) – Photos and commentary from Grudge showing she truly is a queen.
The Story of You (Hardcover) – A new book from one of the authors of The Road Back to You. This focuses on the stories we tell ourselves, based on our Enneagram types, and on helping us write better, more healthy stories for ourselves. I’ll be reviewing this soon (I loved it!).

Christmas. Is. Days. Away. It shouldn’t surprise me, but somehow it manages to sneak up on me. There are only a few new releases on my radar for this week. Here they are:

She Persisted: Oprah Winfrey (Nonfiction Chapter Book)
How Not to Fall in Love (Young Adult) – A romance cynic offers to help her best friend over his umpteenth break up with some lessons in how NOT to fall in love.
Be More Boba Fett (Gift book) – Advice for life from the example of Boba Fett.
How to Spot a Family Murder Plot (e-book, December 22) – Even though Mags isn’t biologically a Murphy, she’s still all in about the family reunion at a Scottish castle. When one of the cousins is killed, the family closes ranks so as not to implicate one of their own, but when Mags’ dad becomes the prime suspect, she isn’t as concerned with keeping family secrets.
School of X (Paperback) – Seven new X-Men stories
Star Trek Deep Space 9: Revenant (Trade Paperback) – Dax heads to a resort casino to help an old friend whose granddaughter has gone a bit wild. But Dax discovers she has changed in some “terrifying” ways. Of course, this is on my list.

Escape From Atlantis – First in a new series by the fabulous Kate O’Hearn. Two cousins are separated from their parents when the boat they are on in the Bermuda Triangle capsizes in  a storm. The kids find their way to an island that turns out to be the lost island of Atlantis. This sounds amazing!
Just Roll With It (Graphic Novel) – Maggie hopes the rolls of her 20-sided dice will help her through the anxiety of starting middle school.

 

Books for Adults


An Accidental Odyssey (Trade Paperback) – Book 2 in the Exlibris Adventure series. A young woman leaves her fiancé at home while she travels halfway around the world to help her somewhat-estranged father, a classics professor, trace Odysseus’ journey around the Mediterranean.
Eyelet Witness (e-book, December 22) – Book 4 in the Bonnie & Clyde Mystery series. Bonnie and Clyde are helping a new customer when she is suspected of murder.
Jane Austen’s Lost Letters (Hardcover) – Book 14 in the Josie Prescott Antiques Mystery series. A fidgety older woman hands Josie a package, mentions Josie’s father, and then takes off. Inside is a card with Josie’s name written in her late father’s handwriting along with two letters signed “Jane Austen.”
The Love Con (Trade Paperback) – Kenya has a chance to launch her cosplay career by entering a contest, but the first challenge requires her “significant other.” Her best friend, Cameron, agrees to step in and play the role. I’ve already pre-ordered this one!
Nightwing; Leaping into the Light (Hardcover collection) – Nightwing and Batgirl are investigating Blüdhaven’s new mayor while also looking for a new villain. Issues 78-83. This is on my list for this week.
Zits: Undivided Inattention (Paperback collection) – A new Zits collection.
Be the Brave One: Living Your Spiritual Values Out Loud and Other Life Lessons (Hardcover) – “Part memoir, part spiritual formation guide” by the first female and openly gay chaplain of the NYFD about the change 9/11 made in her life. This sounds fascinating!
My Dad’s Funnier than Your Dad: Growing Up with Tim Conway in the Funniest House in America (Hardcover) – A memoir.
Star Wars Mandalorian: Art of Season 2 (Hardcover)
